Echinox Journal is a biannual academic journal in world and comparative literature, dedicated to the study of the social, historical, cultural, religious, literary and arts imaginaries
Peer-Review Process
In order to best pursue its research interests and publication policies, Echinox Journal operates a system of open peer-review.
Currently published by the Center for Imagination Studies in Cluj, Romania (a member of the Centre de Recherches Internationales sur l’Imaginaire, which federates research groups from Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Moldavia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, the United States, and Taiwan), Echinox Journal is an important vector for publishing the results of this worldwide network. As such, it welcomes guest editors from different countries, who are invited to propose different topics for special-themed issues. While being open to all contributors, the calls for papers also target renowned specialists in a particular field or subfield, and even explicitly “head-hunt” some of the experts willing to submit seminal papers. The journal’s editorial board and the special-issue editors are in direct contact with the contributors, as this ensures a transparent peer-review process, avoiding some of the shortcomings of the more traditional peer-review process (dishonest reviewing, malicious comments, concealed competitive attitudes, covert plagiarism, etc.). All collaboration in our network is based on reciprocal trust and respect.
In accordance with this policy, in order to be accepted for publication, submissions are individually assessed by experts in the general domains of the journal and in the specific topic area of the issue. Thus, each article is evaluated by three reviewers:
– Domain peer review: the director or a member of the editorial board assesses the article and decides if it fits the general profile and scope of the journal
– Thematic peer review: the issue editor assesses the scientific quality of the article and its relevance to the specific topic of the issue
– Language peer review: a language supervisor checks out whether the article demonstrates linguistic correctness and register appropriateness (in English or in French)
The peer reviewers should have the necessary expertise in the research domain of the manuscripts they evaluate. They should abstain from evaluation if the manuscripts are beyond their expertise.
The peer reviewers are expected to treat objectively the papers they evaluate. Their goal is not to humiliate the authors by harsh commentaries, but to assist the editor in selecting the best papers, and to help authors, if the case, to improve their texts with useful information and revision suggestions.
Should they find themselves in a conflict-of-interest situation, the peer reviewers must refrain from evaluation and notify the editor. Conflicts of interest comprise non-acknowledged participation in the production of the manuscripts, mutual benefit from their publication, competitive attitude towards the authors, profit connections with the authors or their institutions, etc.

The decision concerning the publication or rejection of the article will be communicated within three months of the submission deadline.
